God’s Team Has No Bench

If we were to describe belonging to God in the metaphor of a pro sports team, we might say we were drafted onto His team.

He drafted us to play in the game of life.

He provided all of the training and equipping, in Himself. There is no lack of supply.

He trains us to win.

No positions exist for professional bench warmers or losers.

If we are not training, nor attending team meetings, nor taking things seriously, but instead are bench warming, losing in life, complaining, and making excuses, then we are of no benefit to Him. We don’t even look like Him – we’re not in condition, excited, or even optimistic.

Though the team Owner provides all the talents, He gets nothing in return. Not 10 talents, not 5 talents, not even 1. He only gets back the buried talents of bench warmers who display no reverence for Him.

If they don’t work with Him to get with the program, the Owner cuts such ones from the team (Rom 11:19-22).

Of course, the actual metaphor is marriage to Christ, not a professional sports team.

Marriages cannot survive bench warmers, those who are not fully invested.

He’s provided all in Himself for us to believe Him, receive from Him, love Him, grow in Him.

“Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away: and every branch that bears fruit, He purges it, that it may bring forth more fruit.”  (John 15:2)

That is not the end of the story. Everyone of us has been performing as a losing team, even though we have come to Christ.

“Beloved, we are persuaded of better things concerning you, and things that accompany salvation, though we speak this way.”  (Heb 6:9)

When we come to the end of ourselves, as we all must, we need to see that our Father has given us His Son, Who has overcome all. He will not fail, He cannot fail. And, learning He is your life—you will be like He is in the world. You will walk like He does.

“But they who wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”  (Isaiah 40:31)

“In this is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as He is, so are we in this world.”  (1 John 4:17)

“He, who says he remains in Him, walks like He did.” (1 John 2:6)

Mount up with wings as eagles in Him.
