If something is obliquely wrong, it’s tangential. Off-target. It may sound right, but it’s hitting a false center.
Unfortunately, incorrect teaching has saturated the church for generations, so much so that we don’t know why we’re so unsatisfied, why sins keep hanging on, why many Christian marriages fail, and why we have lost the culture.
An example of missing the mark is seen in the following from Charles Stanley. It’s what we’ve always widely heard, but has never worked and cannot work. It’s repeated endlessly with the repeated failing results.
‘… freedom is not achieved by war or revolution but by knowledge of the truth. Jesus said, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free” (John 8:31-32).’ [Summarized: “Freedom is achieved by knowledge.”]
‘To continue in God’s Word means that we abide in it. It fills our minds, shapes our attitudes and emotions, and directs our behavior. And the result will be freedom from sin and the deceptions that could captivate us. We live in a culture that continually feeds us lies about both God and ourselves. And Satan is the master of deceit, whose goal is to ensnare us in sin so we will be rendered ineffective and useless for God’s purposes. By knowing and obeying Scripture we will discover the truth that sets us free.’
The fail is in the external it of the Scripture.
Jesus says life is not in an it, but in Him:
“(39) You search the scriptures, thinking that in them you have eternal life. But, the scriptures testify of Me, (40) and you will not come to Me, that you might have life.” John 5:39-40
The scriptures tell a history centered on Christ alone – seeing God through His Son.
The scriptures are NOT telling us a story of externalities, whether they are eternal life (which is only found in the Son), or principles and precepts (which are external, derived attributes of Him).
To make the scriptures into things about God, cheats Him out of His glorious love and sacrifice in Jesus Christ!
Freedom is not achieved by only knowing about God.
Freedom is only achieved by knowing the One of Whom history is all about. Jesus Christ Who is in you.
Do you know Him as your Life (Col 3:4)?
If you know Him this way, you’ll share in His victory over every temptation and ultimately, even death itself.
If you do not know Him, then let me introduce you to Someone Who wants to meet you.
